facebook_small.jpgADOTAS – Will this new ad format finally do the seemingly impossible? Facebook has unveiled a new suite of engagement ads in yet another attempt to finally, really monetize social media through ads that have been designed to ramp up click-throughs.

Facebook is billing the change (it’s still being tested) as an evolution to its current Social Ads ad model. Starting next month, eight ad bigwigs (including DreamWorks Pictures and Adidas) will test three new engagement formats.

The formats will allow users to 1) post comments about ads 2) send out virtual gifts designed by brands that function as ads and 3) become a fan of brands and spread the word to their network. Users will also be able to see their friends’ comments and find other fans.

eMarketer recently downgraded its revenue forecast for the social site – from $305 million to $265 million, citing both economic woes and the difficulty of monetizing ads on social networks.
