Software Programmer, Convicted Killer Reiser Brings Police to Wife’s Body
ADOTAS – Convicted murderer Hans Reiser, the creator of a popular filesystem ReiserFS, led police to his wife’s body yesterday, according to a report in The San Francisco Chronicle.
He was to be sentenced for the first-degree murder of his estranged wife, Nina, tomorrow. Nina Reiser disappeared in September of 2006 – no murder weapon was ever found.
The Chronicle reports that Reiser, 44, led police to her body in exchange for a deal in which he’d be sentenced for the lesser charge of second-degree murder. (In April, a jury sentenced him to first-degree murder).
Authorities told the paper that Reiser admitted to strangling wife after a fight. The maximum sentence he could face under the new charges is 15 years to life.
The remains of what police believe is Nina’s body were found on Monday afternoon on a hilly deer trail running between Redwood Regional Park and the Huckleberry Botanic Regional Preserve. Reiser allegedly made a beeline for the site, which is about a half-mile from Reiser’s home at which he lives with his mother and where Nina, 31, was last seen on September 3, 2006.
After revealing the location, Reiser was handcuffed to his lawyer until the body was exhumed. Reiser’s sentencing will likely be delayed.
