Former AOL Exec Launches Online Film Site
ADOTAS – Apparently not one for lazy days on the golf course, the retired AOL exec Ted Leonsis is pursuing his dream of distributing documentaries in a bid to give indie filmmakers broader viewership (and make a few bucks in the process).
Leonsis’ new site, SnagFilms, will take professional documentaries from National Geographic, PBS and others and post them for free viewing on his site and on profile pages on Facebook, MySpace and other social sites.
He’ll rake in revenue with 15-second ads that’ll run every eight to 10 minutes. Leonsis will fork over half of the ad money to filmmakers. Advertising will be sold through AOL, and the company will have be able to use SnagFilms content on its sites.
So far, SnagFilms has about 200 documentaries including faves like “Super Size Me” and “State of the Union.”
SnagFilms is backed by AOL co-founder Steve case and former AOL exec Miles Gilburne.
