woman_blogs_small.jpgADOTAS – Wow – if anyone needed confirmation that social media is here to stay: The McCain and Obama campaigns are participating in a presidential debate. On Twitter. The micro-blogging site allows users to stay in touch through IM’s known as “tweets” – they’re limited to 140 characters each.

Perhaps John McCain’s team agreed to participate in part to defuse the increasingly noisy buzz that the nominee is out of touch with the digital world. (It didn’t help matters when he openly declared himself to be “computer illiterate.”) Democrats in general are beating the GOP when it comes to the online game – according to a study from Pew, 36% of Democrats have social networking profiles, while only 21% of Republicans do.

The candidates aren’t debating directly: Liz Mair, the online director of the GOP’s National Committee will represent McCain; Mike Nelson, an outside advisor to Obama on tech, media and telecommunications will represent the Senator; Ana Marie Cox, the erstwhile Wonkette and current Time blogger, will moderate.

Check out the debate here.
