Microsoft Launches Likely-To-Flop Promo Plan To Rival Google
ADOTAS – In a bid to stymie Google’s overwhelming dominance in the search market, Microsoft has launched the Live Search Cashback program.
The premise: users of Microsoft’s Live Search program will occasionally receive listings of products related to their search query. The model: users following the links will land on a snazzy comparison shopping feature that the software titan pledges will lead to deals galore – the best deal participating companies are offering PLUS an additional discount.
The reality: Microsoft is going to have to offer up a whole hell of a lot more than discounts to catch up with Google any time soon. According to comScore’s most recent numbers, Google had about 60% of the search market locked up, while Microsoft had about 9%.
Google is consistently (albeit slowly) snapping up more market share while Microsoft is consistently (albeit slowly) losing market share.
However, IF Microsoft and Yahoo (it has about 21% of search market share) team up, they have a shot at playing on the same field as Google — especially with the Cashback plan, which does have significant merits, especially as consumers tighten their belts.
Another factor in Microsoft’s favor: a recent report released by Borrell Associates states that the online promotion category is expected to just about triple over the next five years — from $8 billion to $22.8 billion, surpassing every other online advertising category, including paid search.
