Iphone facebookADOTAS – Google Inc. is unfurling a new mobile ad program in a bid to capitalize on the growing mobile Web market. The new program offers banner ads as part of its overall mobile ad offering. The company likens the ads to online advertisements – but smaller.

“For advertisers, mobile image ads serve as a branding tool and have shown to have good clickthrough rates,” Alexandra Kenin, a product marketing manager for mobile ads writes on Google’s Mobile blog. “Advertisers using mobile image ads will also benefit because we only show one image ad per mobile page. For publishers, mobile image ads provide added flexibility. They can now choose to show text ads, image ads, or a mix of both and Google will dynamically return the ad that we expect will perform best at the time the ad is shown. Publishers who are already using AdSense for mobile content just need to update their AdSense code to start displaying mobile ads on their site.”

With this development, Google is clearly trying to position itself in the increasingly competitive mobile advertising market (Yahoo also offers banner ads on mobile phones). All mobile ads will be behavioral targeted so that users won’t be flooded with ads they won’t click on. Oh and incidentally, the ads will be available on a cost-per-click basis.

per click ads in mobile deliver a miserable ROI for the advertiser. the device does not lend itself to anything other than a click, people do not fill forms, etc. Publishers will love this, but advertisers expecting to drive an ROI will hate it.
