Will Google Buy Bebo?
It has been rumored that MySpace or Google may be announcing a large $1 billion to $1.5 billion acquisition in the social media area of the market. TechCrunch has hypothesized that the property potentially being snapped up is Bebo which is currently raising funds as well as looking for a possible acquisition suitor.
Many rumors about a potential acquirer for Bebo have been circling the net for some time. The article mentions the older rumors of Yahoo being a possible bidder, and analyzes that reasons why Google or MySpace would want such a property. Google already having Orkut gives the search engine a strong social network presence in Latin America, but the company could gain a large presence in English-speaking countries which may give it an opportunity to compete with social giants such a Facebook.
The piece continues to discuss the technological benefits MySpace and News Corp. may gain from such a deal, stating that each network is part of Open Social which may allow interoperability between the sites.
