gamer11.jpgADOTAS — Sony Corp. today announced that Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.’s president, Phil Harrison, is resigning and will officially be out on February 29. Harrison has been with Sony’s game software development division for 15 years.

Kazuo Hirai, chief executive of Sony’s gaming arm, will take over Harrison’s duties.
“As one of the founding members of SCE, Phil played a key role in the development and growth of the PlayStation business and our industry,” said Hirai in a statement. “It is sad to see him departing from SCE, but I wish to express my gratitude for his many invaluable contributions and also wish Phil the very best of luck in his future endeavors.”

“The past 15 years at Sony Computer Entertainment has been the defining journey of my life so far,” Harrison said. “I am grateful to all the PlayStation family for their incredible support, guidance and friendship. It has been a privilege to serve as part of the team and be inspired by them on a daily basis. I am so proud of everything PlayStation has achieved and will continue to support its future in every way I can.”

Sony’s gaming division has been lagging recently in comparison to the likes of Nintendo Co.’s must-have Wii, which Harrison blamed on his colleagues at Sony in an interview with Gamesindustry.biz. “[O]ur Japanese colleagues said that there is no such thing as social gaming in Japan — people do not play games on the same sofa together in each other’s homes,” Harrison told the publication. “It will never happen. And then out comes the Wii.”

The rumor mill has been on overdrive regarding Harrison’s departure and several reports, most of which point to Gamesindustry.biz, have him following ex-EA executive David Gardner to Atari where they hope to push the company into the casual gaming sphere.
