N.Y. Sex Offenders Must Submit Their Email Addresses

mouseclick1.jpgThis week, New York lawmakers proposed certain protective measures from convicted sex offenders on social networks. The bill asks that sex offenders register instant messaging and email addresses, which are then passed onto the social sites. These names may then be blocked from registration on the sites.

Facebook and MySpace have said that they would block offenders. A move that is beneficial for the reputation of both as they have come under fire for not being stringent enough in protecting their younger users from such predators.

New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo was quoted in Reuters to say “The Internet is great and affords us all sorts of opportunities and promise, but there are also perils on the Internet.” The bill is titled the Electronic Security and Targeting of Online Predators Act.

Cuomo continued described it as “the most comprehensive, smartest, toughest law in the nation” as far as internet protection is concerned.

Both of the major social networks are onboard having implemented the beginnings of protective measures in the past few months with MySpace’s compliance with 49 U.S. state attorneys general and Facebook’s agreement to investigate any safety complaint within 24 hours.

MySpace CSO Hemanshu Nigam said “Our laws need to keep up with our times,” calling the bill “a powerful new tool to protect our users.”
