Ready for Thanksgiving? I Doubt it.

I’ve had the pleasure of being in the online advertising business almost ten years now. It has been nothing short of a wooden roller coaster ride with a multi story drop in the middle. If you’re not familiar with such a ride, you may want to visit

Hershey

Park and try the Comet. Of course that has little to do with today’s topic of Thanksgiving so I’ll get to it.
In case you haven’t heard from Regis and Kelly or your local news, today is one of the busiest travel days, cooking days, pre-shopping days, family days, pre-sporting event preparation days, and how can I get out of work early and pass my time till then days. What a mouthful. There is obviously a lot on all our minds as some of us plot our escape routes from the city or how we will deal with crazy relatives. Of course I want to bring up the most important thing that should be on your mind today before you leave, have you prepared your accounts for the holiday? Have you adjusted things to take advantage of the largest behavioral shift all year? Are you ready? Whew. With almost ten years in online advertising of repetitive Thanksgiving Holidays (TG) I have finally learned a thing or two. I have learned that human behavior with the computer changes over the next four days. People are in a different mood or spirit due to TG. What they choose to search for, which keywords they are using, why they are searching at all. People go into a completely unique holiday mode during this time and it not only happens at 6am in the Walmart parking lot. It happens online. So as the behavior shifts and we all go into holiday and pre-Christmas mode are your keywords, text copy, budget caps, landing pages, creative ready for the shift? Unlikely.I also know that in the display in-page unit camp that things also dramatically change. People have moments of downtime escaping to the computer to read things they normally wouldn’t or showing the grandparents or the last remaining luddite uncle about the Internet. It is more of a time for exploration, catching up and clicking to just click or check things out that normally you wouldn’t have time or patience for. The TG mood shift is the most significant behavioral event of the year. People are more open, they have missions, and they are more emotional or even frustrated. The shift is real; consider your own extended life. With all the discussion and money spent on behavioral targeting I thought it would be kind to point out that we’re in the midst of the largest behavioral shift right now, with or without technology. Depending on your product or service that you have to offer you can leverage this shift in unique ways. For all you executive, sales people, account managers and creative people out there itching to escape the building, I’d take a moment and consider what the next few days will bring and if you’re ready to make the most of it. Chances are with the madness that is our busy jobs and lives we’ve not had time to adjust just yet, that’s understandable, but a missed opportunity. The madness is just beginning, so there’s still time.On our end, ADOTAS will be on holiday until Monday. We wish you and your crazy family the best Thanksgiving ever and hope you will take a moment to sit with that luddite uncle and have him read ADOTAS and learn about this amazing industry you work in. He should be proud.

Just what we needed, another “black swan” like fundamental shift: the Thanksgiving shift!
