Microsoft CEO Says Google Is Not A Threat

Sopranos TonySteve Ballmer, Microsoft CEO is in Tokyo promoting the launch of Windows Live services and in a press conference, played down the threat of Google, saying the only place where the rival was dominant was in online search.

“Google is not ahead of us,” he said. “In the area of search specifically, Google would lead.”

Today Microsoft began offering its Windows Live programming packages for IM, email, photo-sharing and blogging in Japan. The U.S. announcement was on Tuesday.

Ballmer replied to questions about Google’s mobile plans by saying that they are “just words on paper” so there was no comment to be made yet.

According to a report in Technology Review, Ballmer expressed enthusiasm for the Japanese market, saying that the consumers were ahead of the rest of the world as far as mobile web access is concerned. He did speculate that the company would continue to lose money for a time as it is still in “investment mode” in online businesses.

Over a dozen Japanese companies have signed to be partners with Windows Live so far.

Didn’t Balmer also say that Facebook was a fad, and wasn’t worth $10B, yet, a few days after that, MS invests at $15B valuation? His words mean nothing.
