rocket1.jpgAmazon.com has launched a first version of its music downloading store. The service, which has been widely reported on in the past few months, has been said to be an alternative and possible rival to Apple Inc.’s iTunes.

The store, dubbed “Amazon MP3” will provide music that does not have copy protection; making downloads compatible with the iPod as well as other mp3 players.

Over half of the two million songs available from the service cost 89 cents and prices for songs range from 89 to 99 cents.

iTunes has signed deals with Universal Music Group, and EMI, putting into a position of being the best possible potential rival for iTunes which currently holds 70% of the digital music market.

It has been said that powerful alternatives to iTunes could be strategically beneficial for negotiating purposes against Apple over licensing contracts.
