The tournament started on July 7th with Resistance: Fall of Man. In the first ten days, there were over 6,000 registered participants from announcement date on June 18th. Retail partner GameStop is also providing marketing and promotional support.

Ted Owen, founder of GGL said, “Given our mission to help extend the gaming culture globally, this partnership with SCEA demonstrates how we can do that by combining the power of PS3, online gaming and tournaments with social networking.”

“Teaming with GGL further validates our commitment in building outstanding experiences and providing gamers with the best possible gaming online,” said Jeff Reese, director of software marketing, SCEA.

The live tournaments cross-promote the games and the social aspect of the online experience. GamePlay HD is also partnering with the companies to offer an exclusive opportunity to the tournament. Finalists in the competition will be taken to New York City to play against each other at the GamePlay HD studios. The battle will be filmed for an episode for GGL and the upcoming TV series on video game tournaments.
