Will Google Spend $4.6B At Auction?

ymib2.jpgThe FCC received a letter from Google that claims the company will “commit a minimum of $4.6 billion” on spectrum in an auction next month.

In this letter, Google said it will participate only under the condition that the FCC require the winning bidder to run the spectrum on an indiscriminate basis to ensure the open state of the market. The concern lies in the potential for a market closed to new competitors as the broadband market is mostly dominated by larger cable and telephone companies currently.

Google challengers say that the plan is an effort to keep prices down. As of now, the FCC is not considering the proposal, stating that should they impose such a rule, other bidders may be deterred from partaking.
