Wiki Search Takes On Big Dogs
Fighting the good fight to compete with industry giants Google and Yahoo!, Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales has said that he is planning his own community-developed search service.
Just this past week, Whales’ commercial startup, named Wikia acquired a company walled Grub. Grub is a web crawler that will allow Wikia to find and index websites.
In the tradition of his original project, Wikia, which will launch towards the end of this year, will integrate algorithms and Human-assisted editing.
Wales was quoted in Reuters as saying, “If we can get good quality search results, I think it will really change the balance of power from the search companies back to the publishers.”
