AdSense Trys Out A Mobile Home

gorillachin.jpgLast week, Google started testing a new version of AdSense for mobile Web sites by sending invitations to AdSense users as opposed to the more traditional announcement of a new development.

There has been much buzz in the blogging and SEO community as many members have received invites to the Google beta.

A spokesperson for Google confirmed the beta stating, “Google is committed to finding new and better ways to get users the information they need while on the go, and to opening up new revenue opportunities for our partners. We are currently conducting a limited beta to test AdSense for mobile, a monetization product based on feedback from our users, publishers, and advertisers.”

There is debate over the move due to the size of the market for contextually delivered mobile ads. M:Metric’s vice president of consulting and senior analyst Evan Neufeld asks the question, “How big is mobile advertising at this time, and how much is Google coming into the sane going to impact positively or negatively?”

This new beta may be what mobile advertisement needs to make it a more mainstream category in ad spending rather than an experimental risk for companies.

However, there are people who don’t necessarily think that AdSense will change the mobile market. Founder and CEO of go2Wireless, Lee Hancock said, “Google’s AdSense is a very powerful product online, but it fits a particular niche for advertising. If you look at the way AdSense works online, typically associated with content that is relevant, it’s typically displayed in extra areas on the page. You’re not going to have that flexibility and capability on the mobile phone, with its small screen.”

Hancock continued, “Google will likely be successful; the question is the magnitude of that success.”

Neufeld warned that AdSense’s inventory is just one of the components of the mobile marketing platform. “Is it strictly a banner ad-serving tool?” He concludes that Google would be “missing a big piece of it” should they ignore SMS and MMS messaging.
