RealPlayer Moves Towards The Head Of The Class

tvstatic.jpgAccording to a RealNetworks news release, RealPlayer will have an upgrade available by the end of the month which will allow users to download and record video content from sites like YouTube. The new RealPlayer will enable consumers to store popular streaming formats, including Flash, Windows Media, Quicktime, and Real.

Users who preload the new version of RealPlayer will see a download button floating next to videos they watch where they can post the video’s link information directly.

General Manager Lisa Hungness for National Geographic Online’s New Media department said, “This will be a great new trend in online video viewing for consumers and content owners alike because consumers can share links back to the video’s origin where similar experiences may be found and enjoyed.”

On the other hand, some will question if this opens the door a little too widely for those users who cannot resist the temptations of overt piracy.

The technology to convert YouTube URL’s into a download-friendly flash file has already been in existence. But until now it has mainly been used by a handful of tech savvy surfers capable of finding the necessary software.

Implication for marketers remain fuzzy at best. And with the massive increase in volume and accessibility of rich media available, Internet marketers may need to develop a certain level of comfort with the idea that not all media should be used as a vehicle for promoting goods and services.
