Everyone Can Be Big Brother With Google’s Newest Addition
Google keeps growing and growing and the latest expansion is a partnership with Immersive Media to provide rich media view of local streets in Google Maps.
Late yesterday afternoon, street views on google maps were only available for major hubs in New York, California, Colorado, Florida and Nevada. Immersive Media having footage of reportedly 40,000 miles of North American road available will surely enhance users’ viewing experience.
There will now be a fifth viewing tab on the top right of Google Maps screen called “Street View”. This will allow users to view landmarks, businesses, topography, even street traffic with a 360-degree rotation capability. Immersive Media has plans to go global with increased footage that will no doubt be made available to Google Maps in the future.
“We’ve been working on this for the past 18 months,” said Myles McGovern, president and CEO, Immersive Media. “And we have a number of vehicles out, continuously collecting more data now.”
Immersive has many other clients in national security, mapping, and commercial media industries, however Google is the first company to capitalize Immersive’s technology in such a large public scale.
McGovern believes that although Google does not currently offer advertising in the “Street View”, the possibilites for marketers to sponsor in-video content such as billboards will become popular as rich media technology evolves.

It seems that the Google 3D Mapping Vans handling the west coast have taken up a humbler task since SketchUp got involved. Very exciting nonetheless, if a bit frightening!
