crystalball1.jpgeBay has recently announced the acquisition of a young company called StumbleUpon. This site provides users with a place to fatefully “discover” websites that may spark their interest.

eBay gain a community of 2.3 million users with the $75 million purchase. StumbleUpon’s growing popularity has predominantly been attributed to word-of-mouth advertising. The company was formed in 2001 and has reportedly grown 150% since the original launch date.

StumbleUpon provides about five million new site recommendations a day based on feedback and preferences of users. The site also has an established rating system which allows a user to rate content in order to improve suggestions.

The site’s management is not expected to change with exception of eBay’s Senior Director Michael Buhr being selected as new general manager of StumbleUpon.
