Mobile provider Sprint has announced it will be slashing its music download prices from $2.49 to $0.99 in April, effectively matching the price of downloads for Apple’s iTunes Store.

The Sprint Music Store contains tracks in every major genre from major music labels like EMI, Sony BMG, and the Warner Music Group, as well as independent labels through a partnership with Groove Mobile and IODA. The price cut applies to Sprint’s entire 1.5 million song library, and songs will be available to any Sprint mobile customer with a Sprint Power Vision plan.

Since Sprint launched the music service in 2005, it has sold about 15 million songs at the $2.49 price. At the new price, Sprint says it will include a copy of the song that can be played on home computers.

The reduced price also comes as Sprint announces it will be fielding Samsung’s new UpStage music phone in early April to beat Apple’s iPhone, which arrives in June to the stores of competitor Cingular, owned by AT&T.

Alongside the price cut, Sprint will be offering up to ten free songs per week and two music-centric Vision plans that include free commercial radio channels and mobile TV programming.
