MTV to Pimp Rides Online
MTV Networks will be launching an online world for its “Pimp My Ride” car customization show to go along with its other online worlds, “Virtual Laguna Beach” and “Virtual Hills.”
The “Pimp My Ride” world will be modeled after the town of Van Nuys, California. As the former location of a major Chevrolet factory, Van Nuys has a long history of car culture and hot rodding. The virtual world will let users pimp their own virtual rides, race their rides, and join car clubs.
All of MTV’s worlds are modeled after Southern California. Users will be able to drive their pimped rides to “Laguna Beach” or “Virtual Hills” on a virtual highway. Users will also be able to visit “Pimp My Ride.”
“We really believe that this is going to profoundly change the ways that brands like MTV interact with their audience,” said Matt Bostwick, MTV’s SVP of franchise development at the Virtual Worlds 2007 conference according to CNet.
Like the other virtual worlds, “Pimp My Ride” is powered by the same technology used by Makena Technologies’ There.com. “Ride launches next week and MTV plans to add additional features over the next three months including an e-commerce system, and “MTV Virtual Cribs,” which lets users pimp virtual houses.
MTV’s other worlds have brought in about 600,000 users over the past six months.
