Warner Music Signs Mobile Content Deals
Warner Music Group has announced two new deals with mobile operators that will place its mobile music services in countries throughout the Middle East, North Africa and Europe. Egypt’s Orascom Telecom will deliver Warner’s mobile products, which include fully downloadable tracks in countries like Algeria, Bangladesh, Italy, Pakistan, Tunisia and Egypt. Telenor, a Norwegian telecom group holds the second deal with Warner, will give Warner access to Norway, Sweden, Hungary and Ukraine.
Warner has already negotiated a deal with YouTube, and has made other steps towards positioning itself within the mobile and online download arena. Previously, Warner announced other deals with companies in Russia, China, Latin America, Japan and South Korea.
In a statement to Reuters, a spokesman for Warner said the deals would create an opportunity for Warner to reach Orascom’s 60 million subscribers and Telenor’s customer base, which is at about 105 million.
Warner Chairman and CEO, Edgar Bronfman Jr., stated, “(Orascom’s) scale, ambition and commitment to promoting legitimate, pan-regional mobile music services make them the ideal partner for us as we develop our presence in the Middle East and North Africa.”
Executive Vice President of Digital Strategy at Warner, Alex Zubillaga, noted that Telenor’s scale and reach with its network would catapult Warner to a “whole new level”, adding, “this agreement highlights our commitment to responding to regional variations in the ways consumers access music and to developing digital music opportunities around the world.”
