Hosting.com Wins National Science Foundation Grant to Study Click Fraud

Hosting and collocation company Hosting.com has just won a STTR Phase I grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to help develop technology that detects and prevents fraudulent clicks in pay-per-click systems.

In May 2006, Hosting.com launched a year-long study to examine click fraud through its Hosting.com Labs think tank. Research and development of the click fraud system will also occur through the Hosting.com Labs in conjunction with the University of Louisville.

The NSF’s Small Business Technology Transfer program (STTR) is a highly competitive grant designed to help small businesses develop new technologies that can be used across an industry as a whole. The click fraud rate hit 14.2% in 2006, according to research firm Click Forensics.

“Only 15% of all STTR applications are approved, so the fact that we received one speaks volumes to the technology we have created and the opportunity for commercialization of that technology given some additional research and development,” said Hosting.com CEO Darren King in a statement.

Phase 1 awards up to $100,000 to support about 6 months worth of research. Once Phase 1 is complete, Hosting.com is eligible for Phase 2, which awards up to $750,000.
