BitTorrent, the company and namesake of the popular distributed download protocol, has launched its very own paid download service that will distribute TV shows and movies.

At launch, the new service has about 3,000 movies and shows from media companies like 20th Century Fox, Viacom, Paramount, MGM and Warner Bros. New movies cost $3.99, while older movies cost $2.99, and shows are $1.99 per episode. Movies, however, can only be kept for 30 days.

BitTorrent is also encouraging users of the service to put their own created videos on the network.

The BitTorrent protocol has long been used to distribute both free and pirated content. It’s also commonly used by producers of free content to reduce the bandwidth costs of distribution.

The new entertainment network is using Microsoft’s DRM software, which will help prevent illegal use, but will also limit how users can view the content. The DRM system may prevent those who own non-Windows computers and users of the Apple iPod from using the service. The company will also be facing competition from video start-ups like Joost and other paid download services like iTunes and Walmart.com.

“The BitTorrent Entertainment Network is created by and for the BitTorrent Generation, which has a vast appetite for high-quality, on-demand entertainment,” said BitTorrent president Ashwin Navin in a statement. “Our uniqueness lies in the strength of our community, delivery technology, and the industry’s most comprehensive catalog of digital content.”
