Sony BMG Licenses Music for Podcast

Top three record label Sony BMG has become one of the first of its kind to license its music for use in a podcast, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Rock River Communications, a company that publishes mix CD’s sold in retail stores, has licensed several songs from Sony for use in promotional podcasts produced for DaimlerChrysler and Ford.

Mainstream music labels have long shied away from audio podcasts because they are typically released in non-DRM-compliant mp3 format–the standard audio format playable on nearly all computers and portable audio devices like Microsoft’s Zune and Apple’s iPod—, which is great for podcasters who want their programs to be easily distributed, but a legal headache for music labels which have no control over where and how often their music ends up being played.

The Sony-Rock River deal uses a unique pricing scheme: Chrysler and Ford pay Sony BMG a flat fee and can distribute the podcasts for one year. The fee does not depend on the number of times each podcast episode is listened to. Anyone who downloads the show can keep it as long as they want.

The Chrysler show is available now, and the Ford show will debut later this month.

Hi All,

There are a lot of Royalty Free Music sites where you can buy/license individual tracks at very reasonable cost for your Podcasts without ASCAP, BMI clearance. For example:

www.uniquetracks.com
