Skype Founders Turn Venice Project into Joost
Today, Skype founders Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis unveiled the branding for their new video start-up, formerly known only by its code name: The Venice Project. “We’ve received positive and constructive feedback from our early beta-testers,” said Venice Project CEO Fredrik de Wahl in a statement, “and are now at a stage where we’re ready to reveal our true brand.”
The company is now called Joost, a service that will provide major media outlets like movie studios, TV stations, and other content producers with a fast and cheap way to distribute high-quality video over the Internet. The service will be free to viewers, claims to be “piracy-proof,” and guarantees copyright protection for the content owners.
Joost is still in beta, and the service has yet to strike and major content deals. The nature of the service also puts it into competition with established video distribution networks like YouTube. However, Friis and Zennstrom have a strong track record, founding the file-sharing service Kazaa in 2001, which their company sold to Sharman Networks later that year, along with VoIP service Skype, which they sold to eBay in October 2005 for about $2.6 billion.
While “Joost” doesn’t really mean anything, the sound of the name, de Wahl adds, “has global appeal, embodies fun and energy, and will come to define the best of TV and the best of the Internet.”
