ComScore Networks recently reported that U.S. retail websites, aside from travel, collected $102.1 billion in 2006, nearly 24% higher than the figures from 2005. This figure includes the holiday season, which added up to $24.6 billion between Nov. 1 and Dec. 31, 2006 spent by shoppers. 2005’s holiday spending meanwhile was 25% lower, and online holiday ecommerce accounted for $24.6 billion, up 26 percent versus the year prior.

Gian Fulgoni, chairman of comScore Networks, said in a statement, “2006 was certainly an exceptional year for online retailers as e-commerce spending eclipsed $100 billion for the first time, and growth remained very strong with a 24-percent increase versus last year,” adding, “the online holiday shopping season of course played a vital role in the year’s success, as spending accelerated during the final two months of the year, helping push total online retail spending over the $100 billion threshold.”

The count from the calculations included the twelve days of spending that produced $600 million and above. With all transactions being made online, the twelve days were the strongest days of the year and occurred within November and December. In 2005, only six days of the year reached $500 million in online sales, as opposed to the growth of 2006 and 12 days of $600 million a day sales. Wednesday, December 13th marked the heaviest online spending day of 2006 with $667 million spent. From there, Monday November 27th was the lowest online purchase day with sales reaching $607.6 million.
