Merlin, an agency that represents the independent music sector, has announced that a deal with Snocap will enable the labels’ music to be sold on websites. The announcement came at the annual MidemNet music conference in France, and will allow websites like MySpace to sell its music.

What this means is that thousands of international independent labels will be able to sell digital downloads from their MySpace pages and other websites. Merlin works to secure licensing deals with up and coming media comparable to MySpace and YouTube.

Snocap, which was founded by Napster creator Sean Fanning, will utilize Mystore as an outlet for music to be downloaded from the websites. No specific date has been given towards the Mystore and MySpace feature, but it has been mentioned that it will arrive in the “near future”.

All downloads will be offered in an MP3 format, so that they can be utilized on iPods and other portable music devices as opposed to specific formats for specific programs today.

All members of Merlin will be able to take part in the MySpace/Mystore agreement. Charles Caldas, Chief Executive of Merlin, told Reuters, “This immediately opens up what is currently the most popular Web site in the world to the independent labels.” Only a year ago, MySpace co-founder/CEO Chris DeWolfe had ambitions to make his site be one of the biggest digital music stores available.

Indie record labels currently account for 30 percent of the music sold worldwide.
