Baidu Streams EMI

Chinese portal Baidu has struck a deal with indie music label EMI to stream ad-supported music to Chinese audiences.

Tunes from Typhoon Music, an EMI joint venture that operates music companies in the PRC, Hong Kong and Korea, will be available for free to Baidu users through a special “EMI Music Zone.” The Zone will display advertising, with Baidu and EMI sharing the revenue.

“We believe this partnership with EMI will drive value for Baidu users, content providers and advertisers. It also sets the stage for future cooperation between the internet and music industries,” said Baidu CEO Robin Li in a statement.

Baidu is the largest portal in China, according to the China Internet Network Information Center, and commands 62.1% of the Chinese Internet search market. And when it comes to music-related searches, Baidu leads with 84% of the market, according to iResearch.

EMI and other major music labels have been embroiled in a copyright lawsuit against Baidu, claiming that the portal illegally provides links to illegal recordings on third-party websites. But after a Beijing court ruled in Baidu’s favor in November, EMI said it would not participate in the appeal.

“The cooperation between Baidu and EMI also moves us towards jointly controlling digital piracy,” added Norman Cheng, chairman of EMI Music Asia. The two former opponents have also said they would examine the possibility of a partnership to provide ad-supported music downloads.
