Report: Publicis Plunks Down $1.3 Billion Cash for Digitas
Reports are swirling today that French-based advertising conglomerate Publicis Groupe has acquired interactive advertising specialist Digitas for approximately $1.3 billion. The takeover was a friendly bid and the transaction which will help keep Publicis heavily involved in Web media, according to MSNBC.com. With online advertising projections going through the roof, Publicis is slowly steering away from traditional media.
Publicis chairman and chief executive Maurice Levy was quoted in the Financial Times as stating, “what we can see is a huge migration of investment from traditional media to online media”. Currently, Publicis owns Leo Burnett and Saatchi and Saatchi, with Digitas completing somewhat of a top-tier agency trifecta.
Levy states that Publicis “has been seeking to make an important strategic acquisition which could really boost our presence in the digital marketplace”. Levy also added that this purchase allows Publicis “to immediately attain our goal of being one step closer to the future”.
As an autonomous structure within Publicis, Digitas will continue to be run by David Kenny, the agency’s current chief executive.
