Blip.tv Powers, Unilever Sponsors Ex-Rocketboomer’s New Vlog
Amanda Congdon, the first lady of video blogging, has started her new independent project after leaving Rocketboom and taking a job with ABC.
“Starring Amanda Congdon,” powered by video blogging service Blip.tv, debuts today with a little help from sponsors consumer products giant Unilever and the Paltalk video chat community. Congdon will be giving viewers an inside look at her life in Los Angeles as she manages her life in both traditional and new Internet media.
Congdon was the main personality behind the New York-based Rocketboom before a series of nasty and public disagreements with co-owner Andrew Baron. She now works as a video blogger (vlogger) for ABCnews.com and has just wrapped up the Ford-sponsored environmental vlog “Amanda Congdon’s Trip Across America.” She is also developing a comedy show for HBO.
Unilever will be using Congdon’s new project to promote the Dove Cream Oil Body Wash product. As part of the campaign, Unilever is asking users to create their own video commercials for the product. The best one will air on TV during the Academy Awards and the creator will get a free trip to LA. “Advertisers that have wanted to tap into the growth of online video, but have been concerned about random and unpredictable viral videos, have now found an outlet in independently produced shows like Amanda’s,” said Blip.tv COO Dina Kaplan in a statement.
Congdon will also appear in a separate Dove ad that will run on her program. The Unilever campaign will be supported by a user-generated wiki. “More than anything else, I consider myself a videoblogger,” Congdon claimed, adding, “and these sponsorships are evidence that the world is continuing to take notice of our community.”
