Warren’s Tips on Surviving the ad:tech NYC Party Scene

ad:tech New York is finally upon us, and it has been the most anticipated, talked-about show in years. Being an old ad:tech alumnus, I’ve mastered the art of packing in 15 to 20 meetings a day, but this show has challenged my company to double- or even triple-up on meetings in a half-hour period.

Next week thousands of us will spend Monday and Tuesday running from meeting to meeting, whether at exhibitor booths or meeting rooms or suites. ad:tech is obviously the best vehicle to get valuable facetime with the most current clients and prospects in a 3-day period, but sometimes we discount the intrinsic value of the many happy hours, parties, and other social events surrounding the show. From private parties to huge blowout bashes, these events offer a more casual, low-pressure venue to get to know your peers.

Just like the scheduled meetings during the day, many of us are having to double- or triple-up on happy hours, dinners, and other after-hours events. Many of these diversions begin on Sunday night, such as the AdDrive client-only party featuring the big game between the Patriots and the Colts — if you’re not going to this party, I guess you should be working with AdDrive! Also going on at this time is a fundraiser at Caroline’s Comedy Club featuring Judy Gold with headliner Darrell Hammond from Saturday Night Live.

If you’re a card shark, the MediaWhiz Poker Tournament takes place at Club Deep on Monday night. This has been an exciting event in past years, and the winner earns an entry into the World Poker Tour. My company has been very fortunate at past ad:tech poker events, making the final table each time and winning the entire thing a couple years ago. Also on Monday night is the 4th installment of the Get Real Results Party at Crobar. This is the biggest after-hours event of the show — last year’s party saw over 2000 attendees. I’ll see you there!

If poker isn’t your game, Legacy Media is holding their VIP Blackjack Tournament on Tuesday night at Scores West. With a $10,000 grand prize and a delightful venue, this certainly should be an event to remember.

With all these social events going on, even the most seasoned partier could use some help. So without further ado, I present you with “Warren’s Tips on Surviving the ad:tech Party Scene”:

-RSVP for any party you’re invited to — nothing’s worse then being left out in the cold.

-Stock up on free mints from exhibitors’ booths — you’ll probably need them for your 9am meeting the day after the Get Real Results party.

-If you meet a guy named “Lou”, hang around for a couple minutes — chances are he’ll be buying shots very soon.

-Carry cash — small bills — for tipping bartenders (it’s tough to break a $20 at an open bar), cab rides between parties, and for those “poor college students working their way through school”, if you get my drift.

-If you’re going to dance like a fool, make sure you are surrounded by people looking just as foolish.

-Don’t lose your coat check ticket, or kiss that jacket goodbye.

-Keep your hotel’s address handy — communicating with New York cab drivers is even harder after 8 Jager shots.

-Make sure your cell phone is fully charged! I missed out on a great impromptu party once because the hosts couldn’t get in touch with me.

-Try to pace yourself — many of the happy hours begin at 4pm, but the nighttime events go until 10 hours later.

-The Hilton will restock your mini-bar at all hours of the night — good to know.

-Remember — there are TWO “Scores” — two of them. Go to the wrong one and lose your colleagues for the rest of the night.

-Collect as many blank taxi cab receipts as you can carry — you’ll find they’re as good-as-gold come expense report time.

-Remember which airport you are flying out of… not like I would know that from experience. Really. Never happened.

-If you run into me, offer me a drink.
