eBay, Baidu Join Forces Against Alibaba

Chinese Internet portal Baidu and EachNet, eBay’s Chinese subsidiary, have signed a multi-year partnership to fend off Chinese online auction Alibaba.com and Google partner Tencent Holdings.

Baidu will be promoting eBay’s PayPal Beibao as the preferred online payment system to all customers and online merchants. Baidu will also become the exclusive text-based advertising provider on EachNet, and will be optimizing EachNet’s pages to work with Baidu’s indexing system. Together they will also develop a co-branded branded toolbar to let customers quickly access both companies’ services.

“Today, online shopping is one of the fastest growing segments in China and as the most vibrant online trading community in China, eBay EachNet has been playing a driving role in that development,” said Baidu COO David Zhu in a statement. “By leveraging Baidu’s leading technology to link users and merchants to relevant advertising across eBay EachNet’s platform, this partnership will increase eBay EachNet’s ability to deliver value to their users, merchants and advertisers in China”

Additionally, Baidu search advertising will begin appearing on eBay EachNet in 2007.
