Calacanis Splits from AOL

Jason Calacanis, who sold his blog network, Weblogs Inc, to AOL in 2005, and then spearheaded AOL’s Digg-like re-design of Netscape.com, is finally waving goodbye to the Time Warner-owned Internet giant.

Calacanis leaves hot on the heels of AOL CEO Jonathan Miller, who Time Warner replaced yesterday with NBC veteran Randy Falco. “I’m not inclined to start over with a new guy,” said Calacanis in a New York Times interview.

AOL bought Weblogs, Inc. for approximately 25 million in October of 2005, keeping Calacanis on board to serve as Weblogs, Inc. CEO. The network publishes several popular blogs, including gadget blog Engadget. Then in June 2006, AOL tapped Calacanis to redesign the aged Netscape.com website. He promptly turned it into a clone of the popular news site Digg, letting users submit links to news stories and voting on the ones they think are best, promoting those stories to the front page.

Calacanis had a close relationship with Miller and wrote a long eulogy on his personal blog on Wednesday, calling Miller “one of the few mentors I’ve had in my life.”
