Google Turning Japanese

Google has launched a Japanese-language news site for mobile users. In Japan, more people use the Internet on-the-go through their mobile devices than they do at home. The news service brings in news from around 30 primary Japanese sources, including NHK, Japan’s government- run news service and Asahi, one of Japan’s largest newspapers. News stories are organized by topic like economics, politics and top stories. Each mobile news headline links to the appropriate news source’s mobile site.

According to Google product manager Angela Lee in a briefing yesterday in Tokyo, “People want to check the news all the time. We’ve created something that’s easy to use and view on handsets.” Google also runs a Japanese news service over the normal Internet that’s still in beta. Also, Google’s service is free, while other mobile news services in Japan charge for access.

Meanwhile, Yahoo Japan is moving the other way, towards paid digital content downloads by offering music and video previews which can then be downloaded for a fee. About 15% of Japan’s 21 billion dollar digital content industry came from mobile users last year, according to the Digital Content Association of Japan.
