Google Launches Custom Search Engine

Google has launched a new service that lets users create a customized search engine that picks information off of blogs and web sites those users want and serves it up in a Google search-like fashion.

Google Custom Search Engines lets users specify which sited they want to include in their personalized index, how to prioritize it, whether or not others can contribute to it, and what the search results page will look like.

The new service is already in use by several Google partners. JumpUp.com, an Intuit company, serves up small, business-related search results. RealClimate.org serves up climatology-related items. “We want to make it easy for anyone to create a search engine about all of their favorite topics, without needing a Ph.D.,” said Marissa Mayer, Google’s VP of Search Products and User Experience in a statement. “Everyone — businesses, organizations, moms, dads, teenagers, and teachers — can harness the power of Google technology to create a personalized search experience that reflects specific knowledge and interests.”

Google Custom Search includes a revenue sharing model that works the same as the integrated AdSense search box. Organizations like schools, non-profits and government institutions can choose to not display advertising. Google intends to roll out the new service internationally within the next few weeks.
