Facebook Testing Content Sharing
Social network Facebook is testing a new “Share” function, which lets users share images, video, blog posts and other content through their profile pages or send them to their Facebook friends.
Users of the new feature simply click a “Share” button next to whatever content they want to publicize. A window pops up and lets the user preview the shared content, add a bit of commentary and select whether or not they want to post it to their profile or send it to friends. Users can also share content that isn’t hosted by Facebook with a Share bookmarklet, a snippet of javascript that can be placed in a browser’s bookmark list or shortcut toolbar, or they can enter the information in manually. A special section on the user’s home page also lets them see the latest content they’ve shared.
Facebook is rolling out a limited beta version of the service at select California universities. When Facebook introduced its News Feed feature across the entire network in September, it met with a lot of protest from users, who feared that it had invaded their privacy.
Facebook is an independent company, and is considered the number two social network behind MySpace, according to the number of registered users. The company will reportedly not sell out to anyone unless they can meet the asking price of $1 billion.
