Ask.com Unveils Mobile Search Tools

No longer content playing underdog to the big 3 search providers, Ask.com today introduced a search engine for mobile phones, which the company says will offer a streamlined design that gives mobile users faster access to information.

While the move outside of the search box and into the wireless space prompted some debate within parent company IAC’s Search & Media Division, Doug Leeds, VP of products at Ask.com, told Red Herring that the search engine was the result of extensive user testing.

“We had a controversy in the company,” he said in a statement. “It was religion for us to say the search box would be the first thing you would see.”

The new window includes a clickable option for search at the top, along with options for driving directions, images, business listings, maps, weather, and IAC’s Bloglines service.

With the new engine, Ask.com found that users got results 25 to 40 percent faster than by putting the search box on the first screen.

At this weekend’s Digital Life Expo in New York, the company will go further in-depth and unveil new mobile search features “smart answers”, algorithmic search tool Expert Rank, “Skweezer” graphics technology as well as the BlogLines function, which allows users to pick up RSS feeds via mobile phones.
