Report: Sophisticated Crime Syndicates Taking Over Cyber Scams

Homespun hackers are dwindling as a threat to the online space, but much more sophisticated and threatening cyber criminals are emerging. According to a Reuters report, cyber-scams are increasingly being committed by organized crime syndicates out to profit from such complicated scams. Said groups typically engage in ID theft, carding, and “Botnet armies” where large numbers of computers are taken over and used to infect other machines.

According to Christopher Painter, deputy chief of the computer crimes and intellectual property section at the Department of Justice, “There has been a change in the people who attack computer networks, away from the ‘bragging hacker’ toward those driven by monetary motives.”

The FBI estimates that all types of computer crime in the US costs the industry about $400 billion. High cost aside, there is increasing fear that cyber crooks will target emergency services for extortion purposes or that terrorists may attack critical utility networks like water and electricity. Large multi-country raids on Internet crime have demonstrated that national enforcement agencies can work well together to combat the incidents.

“There is no question the threats are varied and the perpetrators are more sophisticated,” Painter said. “On the upside the response is also getting better.”
