About.com Buys Weight Loss Site
New York Times-owned reference site About.com has purchased Calorie-Count.com, a weight loss and nutrition information site operated by AeroDiet.com. Through Calorie-Count.com, visitors can help manage their weight loss plan by counting calories, getting nutritional information, and utilizing other tools to monitor diet and exercise. The site also includes forums and blogs.
Last month, Calorie-Count.com saw 24 million page views and brought in 464,108 unique visitors. About.com will use Calorie-Count’s assets to bolster its Health and Food sections. About currently gets 44 million monthly page views for its Health and Food Channels.
“About.com has consistently been the second largest health channel and the fourth largest food channel on the Web said Janet L. Robinson, CEO of the New York Times Company in a statement. “This acquisition will further expand About.com’s leadership in these two key verticals, providing wonderful new content and functionality for our users. Additionally, Calorie-Count.com offers a significant opportunity to attract highly sought advertising in the health and nutrition categories.”
Calorie-Count claims to have a 125% growth rate, and its two founders will become employees of About.com in About’s Health division.
