Yahoo China Clashes with Former Head of Operations
Reuters has reported that Yahoo China’s former head of operations, Zhou Hongyi, and Yahoo China itself have filed a lawsuit and a countersuit, respectively. Zhou is alleging defamation, claiming that Yahoo China has expressed “incorrect facts” and has verbally abused him through various media methods.
Zhou sold his Internet search business, 3721, to Yahoo in 2003 for $120 million and remained with the firm until Alibaba.com bought Yahoo China. Yahoo Inc. has a 40% stake in Alibaba that it purchased last year. Zhou is currently the chairman of Qihoo, another China search company, and is known in the Chinese Internet world as a highly vocal, opinionated entrepreneur.
Chinese media reports further claim that Alibaba has accused Zhou of “unethical business practices,” thus motivating his lawsuit. In response, Alibaba is suing Zhou, though it has not elaborated on the allegations.
“Alibaba has decided that its affiliated units and business departments starting from today will never make any investments with Zhou Hongyi and will have no involvement whatsoever with any of his companies,” Alibaba said in a statement.
