AdAge has reported that Sony has developed a new Wi-Fi communicator targeted towards 18-22 year olds. Mylo, short for “my life online,” connects to the Web using private and public Wi-Fi networks. While it resembles the Sony PSP hand-held gaming system, Mylo has a slide-out keyboard for e-mailing and instant messaging, as well as built-in Skype web-phone software.

“The Mylo personal communicator puts the fun parts of a computer in the palm of your hand,” said John Kodera, Sony Electronics director-product marketing for personal-communication devices. “It’s ideal for people who want to stay connected to their online friends and family, but not be weighed down by a PC or buffeted by charges for IM and texting on cellphones.”

To promote Mylo, Sony is launching rushmylo.com that invites students to pledge an online fraternity or “thumb-ternity.” The company will also use traditional banner advertising and serve up videos of thumbs in college situations on unpaid searches.

Sony has signed agreements with Yahoo Messenger, Google Talk, and Skype to allow users to access those services on Mylo. Users can also access other web-based email systems. Mylo is set to go on sale in September
