According to the results of a poll by rich media purveyor/advocate PointRoll, the E-Voter Institute and HCD Research, more than 250,000 politically-minded users interacted with rich media survey-related ad units from June through August. The First Annual Voter Expectations Survey also polled readers of 17 national and daily newspapers in the U.S.

“This survey validates the idea that the Internet is a sleeping giant and differentiator in the political campaigning process,” said PointRoll CEO Chris Saridakis in a statement. “In exploring the relationship between the views of political communication leaders and voters, we’ve revealed that the interactive online environment is growing in its influence and usage among voters. We believe it will awaken and energize the political process online.”

The survey found that 87% of voters expect a political candidate to at least have a website. Most of them also expect that website to have video commercials, and for a political candidate to do online fund raising, run an online campaign as well. More than half of respondents said they expected a campaign to involve blogs and podcasts. In contrast, less than 5% of 18-24 year olds saw direct mail as an effective campaigning method.
