MySpace Takes the Stage with Comedy Service

Before becoming the über-popular social networking service we know today, MySpace started out as a site designed to promote indie bands. Now, it hopes to do the same for comedy. MySpace announced today that it has hooked up with The Improv, a national comedy club chain, to launch MySpace Comedy. The new service will give MySpace visitors a behind-the-scenes look at improv comedy at clubs around the U.S.

“Comedians have been working MySpace into their routines and giving out their URLs as early as 2004,” said MySpace co-founder Tom Anderson in a statement. “It was a no-brainer to make a Comedy section and features designed especially for them. It’s our hope that MySpace Comedy, much like Music and Film before it, will serve as a launch pad for up-and-coming comedians and as an attraction for the biggest names in the industry.”

Already, more than 7,500 comedians are using MySpace Comedy’s new tools to post tour dates, share media clips, and talk to their fans. MySpace plans to promote various comedy events around the country, display video clips, and provide comedy discussion forums. The Improv in turn will use MySpace to promote various events, and even special shows for MySpace users. To promote the new site, MySpace is involved in content-sharing deals and is sponsoring numerous comedy events including “Just for Laughs” in Montreal next weekend.
