Motorola Invades Chinese Mobile Gaming Market
As China maintains its reign as one of the world’s top game markets, technology and gaming companies continue to join hands to develop online and mobile games in that locale. According to Reuters, the latest of these endeavors is being undertaken by Motorola. In China, the US cell phone maker has launched its first online game-playing mobile phone.
The E680G is a modified version of an existing gaming handset adapted to play online titles from Shanda Interactive Entertainment. The agreement makes for the integration of mobile versions of Shanda’s World of Legend and Magical Land online role-playing adventure games. Users download the games from www.motogames.com.cn.
“This is our first online game on a handset,” said Ian Chapman-Banks, Motorola’s North Asia general manager of marketing and business development for mobile devices. “Eighty-three percent of China mobile phone users play games on their mobile phones. This is why we’ve chosen China first.”
More than 100 million handsets are sold each year in China, with Motorola commanding about 20% of the cell phone market, and there are at least 400 million mobile phone subscribers. The game site along with Motorola’s Chinese music-download site, which was launched a year ago, give fees to content providers, and there are no plans to develop the sites as revenue centers.
