Netscape Makes Blog-Friendly Attempt to Lure Back Visitors

RedHerring.com has announced today that Netscape, in an attempt to lure visitors back to its lagging site, is following the trend of community-driven news. The new social news site will feature stories that readers submit and rank. The stories will then rise and fall on the page based on statistics like the number of votes, comments, page views, links, and length of time viewed.

Unlike other social news sites like Digg and Newsvine, the Netscape venue will be monitored by an editorial staff of “anchors.” While other sites are opposed to editorial control, AOL Time Warner-owned Netscape tends to attract a more mainstream audience and the anchors are necessary to rank, monitor, and guide the submitted material.

AOL exec Jason Calacanis describes the anchors as being vital in preventing “salacious or inaccurate news” from entering the site, but will act more as moderators than filters. According to comScore Media Matrix, Netscape saw its number of unique visitors drop by twenty-five percent over the past year, and is relying on the profitability of established social news sites to increase its audience.
