EMI Music, LTDnetwork to Relaunch Qtrax Network
Once-defunct, Gnutella-based P2P network Qtrax, owned and operated by LTDnetwork, has found new life thanks to an ad-supported partnership with EMI Music. The new joint offering, called Qtrax Max, lets users search and download music off of the open Gnutella p2p network, but with certain restrictions to keep users from downloading copyrighted music.
The re-launched service will actually have two tiers: a free version supported by advertising, and a premium version payed for by a monthly fee. The free version will only let users download registered Qtrax music in their proprietary DRM-ed .mpq format. Whenever a user listens to a song, they’re presented with an opportunity to buy related items. Users of the premium service will be able to transfer their music to a Windows Media portable player.
“We think that any ad-supported model should be offered in a way that maintains, or even enhances the value of music,” said EMI North America CEO David Munns in a statement. “The Qtrax service will also ensure that our artists are compensated for their works and that the value of their music and integrity of our content is protected.”
LTD will share Qtrax ad revenue with their music industry partners, of which EMI is the first. The test version of Qtrax will launch in Q4 2006 in the U.S.
