Skype announced plans tolaunch a mobile handset that will offer users the ability to make free calls from the handset to a PC via Wi-Fi some time this summer. The service will also allow users to make low cost calls from their handsets to other phones.

NetGear will make the handset, and calls between handsets and PC’s will be free in the United States and Canada until 2007. The handset will be the first device that will allow consumers to use Skype not on a computer. Skype’s new Wi-Fi handset technology will help the company compete with Google and Yahoo who are catching up with Skype in the area of VoIP because Skype users will be able to use the service with any type of wireless access and give Skype more exposure.
