Marchex Buys AreaConnect Pieces

Search marketer and lead generation company Marchex has purchased several assets of AreaConnect, a company that drives traffic to Yellow and Whitepages publishers. Marchex paid AreaConnect $16 million, plus stock and additional benefits to the AreaConnect founder, who will also join Marchex.

AreaConnect has users from all 50 states and Canada. Marchex is focusing on developing their local market reach. The company expects that the added assets of AreaConnect will increase Marchex’s monthy traffic by more than 1 million unique users, while helping them develop connections with Yellow and White Pages publishers. Their current network gets several million unique hits sent to them through AreaConnect and sites like Yellow.com and Whitepages.net. Marchex has said they will help AreaConnect develop their technology, sales and business.

“AreaConnect’s sites and underlying technologies are very complementary to Marchex’s existing local assets. This acquisition will add to our growing network of locally and vertically focused Web sites that provide excellent consumer utility, along with highly targeted advertising inventory and qualified leads for online merchants,” said Marchex’s chief strategy officer Peter Christothoulou in a statement.
