Internet Access Reaches One Billion Mark

According to the latest eMarketer study, “Worldwide Online Access: 2004-2010,” Internet access became available to one billion people around the world in late 2005 with approximately 845 million people using the Web regularly. The U.S. came out on top as the single country with the largest Internet population of 175.4 million Internet users (43.7% broadband users) followed by China with 111 million (34.1 percent broadband users).

The study also found that there were 108.1 million broadband users in the U.S. at the end of 2005 with 48 million broadband subscriber lines and 43.7 million households with broadband access. By 2010 there will be 173.5 million broadband users in the US, up from 108.1 million in 2005. eMarketer also estimates that at the end of 2005, over 40% of U.S. online households were still using dial-up, but this number will decrease to less than 15% of online households by 2010.

Regionally, Asia-Pacific was the largest broadband area containing nearly 40% of the world’s broadband households, but Latin America was the fastest growing broadband region worldwide with 70% subscriber growth.
